Shops and wet weather activities In Elgin (6 miles south) there are 24 hour Tesco and Asda's and an M & S foodhall. There is an indoor sports centre with swimming pool, ice rink and gym. There is a cinema and a bowling alley. There are theatres in Lossiemouth, Findhorn and Inverness. Fast food is available - Burger King and a McDonald's in Elgin and a wider range of shops and amenities in Inverness. There are many local restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets from gourmet downwards! Johnston's cashmere mill is in Elgin and has an excellent shop as does Baxter's in Fochabers. events Outdoor pursuits: There are many golf courses locally. The Cairngorms and Aviemore are an hour away; the beautiful Spey valley ends at Fochabers, 13 miles away and Findhorn estuary is 9 miles away along the coast as is the beautiful Culbin forest. The coast in both directions is home to many picturesque fishing villages and castles. There is a Whisky Trail, many distillieries and many castles - Cawdor, Ballindalloch and Brodie - within a short drive. Loch Ness begins at Inverness and offers boat trips, fishing and bird watching opportunities. There are also local steam trains offering scenic trips and ospreys at Loch Garten. The Moray Firth itself offers swimming, sandy beaches, rock pools, bird and dolphin watching, fishing, boat trips and dinghy sailing; intrepid folk surf at Lossiemouth and windsurfing and kite sailing occur at Findhorn. |
